ABOUT ABOUT

Join United By Blue, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Keep Philadelphia Beautiful, and the Philadelphia Water Department for a cleanup of Darby Creek in John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge this August!

The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge was the first Urban Refuge in the United States, created to protect and preserve the area’s essential marshlands and tributary creeks. Located in the Delaware Estuary, the Refuge is a natural oasis for both wildlife and city-dwellers. The Refuge not only exists to conserve the freshwater tidal marsh that is essential for maintaining the health of the Estuary ecosystem, but also to serve as an environmental education center for park visitors. Darby Creek flows into these marshlands, and filters into the Delaware River. It is an important corridor for fish and wildlife migration, and provides a scenic natural landscape for park users. Maintaining the health of this stream is essential for the Delaware Estuary’s overall health, and removing land-based trash/litter from the creek banks can do a great deal to protect this ecosystem. Help us clean up trash that flows into the Refuge, and keep this natural sanctuary beautiful and healthy!

United By Blue will provide all cleanup supplies, snacks, and water. Join us for cleanup games, prize giveaways, and a day of enjoying and caring for Darby Creek in the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge!

United By Blue thanks Zipcar for its transportation support during the 2018 cleanup season.
