ABOUT ABOUT

Join the Riverside Park Conservancy and United By Blue for a cleanup of the Hudson River in Riverside Park!

A symbol of early American trade, the historic Hudson River flows for 315 miles from the Adirondack Mountains south, where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean between NYC and Jersey City. Named after Dutch Explorer, Henry Hudson, who sailed the river in 1609 with the Dutch East India Company, the Hudson River was originally used by Native Americans, including the Algonquin and the Mahicans. Later, in early European settlement, it became a very prominent and profitable trade route connecting to Canada and the Great Lakes Region.

After the Hudson River Railway was built in 1846, Riverside Park was proposed in 1865. Spanning from 1875-1910 the park was built up between 72nd St. and 125th St. The concept of the park was inspired by the idealism and beauty of the Hudson River Valley, and was to appear as if it was an extension of the valley. In the early 20th century, the park's border extended north. Riverside Park is recognized as a scenic landmark, and serves as a relaxing oasis and an adventure platform for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Please help us clean up the Hudson River at Riverside Park and preserve its beauty!

United By Blue  will provide water, snack and cleanup supplies for all volunteers. All volunteers will have the chance to win prizes during two cleanup games: weirdest trash find and total weight guess. Keep in touch for updates about the cleanup. Groups of all sizes are welcome!

Please wear closed toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty or wet.

United By Blue thanks Zipcar for its transportation support during the 2017 cleanup season
