ABOUT ABOUT

United by Blue is teaming up with the National Parks Service for a cleanup of the New York Bay at Fort Wadsworth!

Overlooking the New York Bay, Fort Wadsworth stands firmly on the northeastern shore of Staten Island. Facing the modern and bustling Verrazano Bridge, the fort and surrounding campus, now part of Gateway National Recreation Area, provide a contrasting glimpse into early United States history and the protection of the harbor. The New York Bay connects the Hudson River to the Atlantic Ocean, and is considered one of the largest natural harbors in the world. The waters and shoreline offer a diverse ecosystem for sea mammals, fish, and migratory birds. Unfortunately, due to the urbanization of the surrounding area, dumped litter and storm-water debris get washed on shore, and threaten the health of the water. Please join United by Blue and National Parks Service as we tackle the trash, and restore our historical New York Bay at Fort Wadsworth!

After the cleanup, our friends at Luke's Lobster will provide a delicious lunch to all volunteers and the opportunity to learn more about sustainable seafood. Post-lunch, National Parks Service will be offering a free guided tour of Ft. Wadsworth for all volunteers, starting at 1 pm!

United By Blue thanks Zipcar for its transportation support during the 2018 cleanup season.
