Join United by Blue for our first cleanup with Mappy Hour and Hudson River Park Trust on the Hudson River at Gansevoort Peninsula!
The Gansevoort Peninsula is located in Hudson River Park near the historic Meatpacking District of New York. Even before colonial settlement, the Native Americans used this area along the Hudson as a trading post, and as seasonal encampment, taking advantage of the hunting, fishing, and the mulitude of oyster reefs. Europeans were attracted to the oysters reefs and access to water, and by the 19th century, the Gansevoort Peninsula became heavily populated. In the development of the industrial age, this region became attractive to factories, particularly those involving the meat industry. By the 1900s, the area was made up of over 200 meat markets and slaughterhouses. Unfortunately, the pollution that went with the industrial age, in addition to over farming led to the demise of the oysters.
Today, the Meatpacking District has seen a revival of residential interest. The city holds to its gritty, industrial roots with a twist of creative redevelopment particularly in the art and fashion industry. New York natives and tourists flock to this area to take a stroll on the High Line, or find recreation in Hudson River Park. While the Gansevoort Peninsula has come a long way since the Industrial Revolution, trash and litter still finds it way to the Hudson River, either blown from the city streets or washed up on the banks. Please join us to clean up and restore the Hudson River and the Gansevoort Peninsula!
United by Blue will host the cleanup from 5-7 pm, and provide all of the cleanup supplies. All volunteers will also have the chance to win United By Blue prizes during two cleanup games.
Immediately following the cleanup, Mappy Hour will host a happy hour for the volunteers (21 and older) at the United by Blue store (245 Elizabeth Street, New York, NY 10012). To register for Mappy Hour, click here.
Please be sure to wear closed toe shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty or wet! Groups of all sizes are welcome!
