ABOUT ABOUT

Please join United by Blue, honeygrow, and the Lower East Side Ecology Center for a cleanup of the East River at East River Park.

The historic East River flows for 16 miles through New York City. In early American history the river served as vital resource for trade and expansion, as a route to the various boroughs of New York. The East River is considered a salt water tidal estuary, connecting to the Long Island Sound, and has a very diverse ecosystem. Unfortunately, the tributaries that connect to the East River, often carry trash downstream. As the tide rolls in and out, this litter and debris get trapped along it's banks.

United by Blue and the Lower East side Ecology Center will lead volunteers on an adventurous cleanup into the coves at East River Park. These rocky landforms collect the trash from the East River and leave an unsightly scene for park vistors, as well as serve as a danger for the marine wildlife and shore birds. Please help us to cleanup the coves at East River Park, and help to make a healthier East River.

Volunteers will need to climb into the rocky coves at East River Park to access the trash. Please wear sturdy shoes and comfortable, flexible clothing that you don't mind getting a little dirty or wet!  honeygrow will provide delicious snacks for all volunteers before the cleanup.

United By Blue thanks Zipcar for its transportation support during the 2017 cleanup season.
