ABOUT ABOUT

Join The Bronx River Alliance and United by Blue for a cleanup of the Bronx River at Concrete Plant Park. The Historic Bronx River runs for 23 miles with an 8 mile stretch through the Bronx borough. Originally, a source of fishing and fresh water to the Mohegan Native Americans, the river quickly attracted European beaver traders in the 17th century. By the end of the 19th century the river was lined with industrial plants. Unfortunately, with the industry, came heavy amounts of pollution, sewage and debris filling the water, making the Bronx River one of the most heavily polluted rivers in America.

Today, there have been great strides made by the grassroots efforts of many environmental groups like the Bronx River Alliance, toward the revitalization of the Bronx River.  Concrete Plant Park, is one of many green spaces that now line river creating a platform for outdoor recreation like row boating, biking, and sports. Although the water quality in this park has tremendously improved, it still collects litter from the busy streets that surround it. This cleanup event will prevent trash from being washed down the Bronx River into Long Island Sound. Please help The Bronx River Alliance and United By Blue clean-up and continue to preserve this urban oasis.

United By Blue  will provide water, trash bags, supplies, and gloves for all volunteers. All volunteers will have the chance to win prizes during two cleanup games: weirdest trash find and total weight guess. Keep in touch for updates about the cleanup. Groups of all sizes are welcome!

United By Blue thanks Zipcar for its transportation support during the 2017 cleanup season.

Due to some steep hills, this cleanup is most suitable for volunteers 12 and older.

Please wear closed toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty or wet.
